How Do YouTube Shorts Earn Money in India? Revenue Share Explained

By smmozo editorial teamUpdated 7 min read

Quick answer

YouTube Shorts earn money through the YouTube Partner Program. Ads shown in the Shorts feed create revenue that YouTube shares with eligible creators, and fan funding tools can add more. Full ad revenue sharing needs 1,000 subscribers and 10 million valid public Shorts views in 90 days, or 4,000 valid public watch hours in 12 months. From 1 February 2027 new applicants need 20 million Shorts views or 8,000 hours. No view count guarantees any income.

How do YouTube Shorts earn money?

Shorts do not earn from ads placed inside the video the way a long video does. Instead, ads appear between Shorts as people scroll the Shorts feed. YouTube collects that revenue and shares a portion with creators who are in the Partner Program, according to how much their Shorts were watched.

Your share is therefore tied to your Shorts views, not to a fixed price per view. Several factors affect what reaches you, including where the viewers are and how the platform allocates the pooled revenue. Always read the current Shorts monetization terms you accept in Studio, since YouTube can update them.

This guide gives no earnings figures on purpose. Income per view changes, and any fixed rate you see quoted online is only a guess.

Do you need 10 million Shorts views, or 4,000 watch hours?

You need one of the two routes, plus the subscriber count and policy requirements. For full ad revenue sharing, the Shorts route is 10 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days, and the other route is 4,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months. Both need 1,000 subscribers.

For early access to fan funding tools, the numbers are lower: 500 subscribers, 3 valid public uploads in 90 days, and either 3,000 watch hours in 12 months or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days. These apply until 31 January 2027. From 1 February 2027 new applicants need 1,000 subscribers plus 20 million qualified public Shorts views in 90 days or 8,000 qualified public watch hours in 365 days. Existing partners are not affected. Check the full requirements guide for the complete list.

Which path is easier for a Shorts creator?

The Shorts route is a rolling 90 day window, which means views must stay high continuously. A single viral Short can help, but it will age out of the window. The watch hours route is a rolling 12 month window, so it rewards slower and steadier work.

The right choice depends on what you make. If your channel is mostly Shorts, the Shorts route is the natural target. If you also publish long videos or live streams, the watch hours route may be closer. Studio shows both so you can compare how far you are on each.

  • Mostly Shorts and short topics: track the Shorts views route first.
  • A mix of Shorts and long videos: compare both routes in Studio each month.
  • Mostly long videos: work on watch hours and use Shorts only for discovery.
  • Keep both routes in view, because the closer one can change as your channel grows.

How can Shorts become a funnel to long videos?

A Short is a short introduction. It can show a viewer that you are worth following, then point them toward a deeper video on the same topic. This matters because long videos give you more room to teach, build trust and earn watch time, and they support more ways of making income later.

Plan Shorts and long videos together instead of treating them as separate channels. Make a Short that answers one small question from a long video, and mention in the Short or the pinned comment where the full explanation is. Use a related video link where Studio allows it.

  1. Pick a long video that is already doing well and find its single most useful moment.
  2. Cut that moment into a Short with a clear hook in the first second or two.
  3. End by pointing viewers to the full video, and link it using the related video option.
  4. Check in Studio whether Shorts viewers are watching your long videos or subscribing.

What other income can Shorts lead to?

Shorts viewers can become subscribers, members and customers if the topic suits it. Fan funding tools such as channel memberships and Super Thanks open at the early access tier. Beyond YouTube itself, creators earn from brand sponsorships, affiliate links and their own products or services.

For these, a Short is often the first step. A well made Short on a product you really use can attract both viewers and brands. Always follow disclosure rules when a video is paid or includes affiliate links, and keep recommendations accurate.

  • Channel memberships and Super Thanks become available once you reach the early access tier.
  • Brand sponsorships can follow when your Shorts show a clear audience and topic.
  • Affiliate links can sit in descriptions or pinned comments where permitted.
  • Your own course, service or product can be promoted to the audience Shorts brings.

What should you avoid when making Shorts for income?

The quickest way to lose a Shorts monetization chance is to post material that is not yours. Reposting clips from films, reels and other creators with no real changes invites reused content problems. Also avoid buying views, because invalid activity can be removed and can put the channel at risk.

Another mistake is chasing trends that do not fit your niche. A Short that gets lots of views from people who will never watch anything else does little for subscribers or long video watch time. Aim for fewer, better Shorts in a focused topic area.

  • Do not reupload other peoples clips, songs or screen recordings without adding your own value.
  • Do not buy views or use engagement groups to push a Short.
  • Do not copy one template for dozens of Shorts, because repetitious content is a common rejection reason.
  • Do not ignore copyright, music licensing and advertiser friendly guidelines.

Nobody can promise views or approval. Treat Shorts income as something you earn over time with consistent original work.

What to do next

Start by checking where you stand today, since the best route for your channel depends on the numbers Studio gives you. Use our YouTube monetization checker to compare your channel against each tier before you plan.

  1. Open the Earn section in YouTube Studio and note your subscribers, Shorts views and watch hours.
  2. Decide whether the Shorts views route or the watch hours route is closer for you.
  3. Plan a weekly mix of original Shorts and at least one long video on the same topic.
  4. Review your channel against the originality rules, then apply when you meet a tier.
  5. If you want help with the application and channel review, see our YouTube monetization service.

Frequently asked questions

Can I earn from YouTube Shorts in India?

Yes, if your channel joins the YouTube Partner Program. Ads in the Shorts feed generate revenue that YouTube shares with eligible creators. You must meet the subscriber, views or hours and policy requirements, and YouTube makes the final decision.

How many Shorts views do I need to be monetized?

For full ad revenue sharing you need 10 million valid public Shorts views in 90 days plus 1,000 subscribers. For early access to fan funding you need 3 million valid public Shorts views in 90 days, 500 subscribers and 3 uploads. From 1 February 2027 new applicants for full ad revenue need 20 million Shorts views in 90 days.

Do Shorts views count towards the 4,000 watch hours?

The two routes are separate. You can qualify through the 4,000 valid public watch hours route or the 10 million Shorts views route. Check YouTube Studio for how your Shorts and long videos are counted for each route. From 1 February 2027 the watch hours route for new applicants rises to 8,000 hours.

How much money do Shorts make per view?

There is no fixed amount. Shorts income comes from a share of pooled ad revenue and varies with viewer location, total watch activity and other factors. Anyone quoting a flat rate per view is guessing, so check your own Studio data.

Are Shorts or long videos better for earning?

They do different jobs. Shorts reach new people quickly, while long videos build deeper trust and watch time. Most creators use Shorts for discovery and long videos for depth, and combine both with sponsorships or their own products.

Can I use clips from movies or other creators in my Shorts?

It is risky. Reposting other peoples content with little change can lead to reused content rejection or copyright problems. Use your own footage, voice and ideas, and add real commentary or teaching if you reference outside material.
