You can earn from both platforms, but they pay in very different ways. YouTube pays you directly once your channel is accepted into its Partner Program. Instagram mostly pays you indirectly, through brand deals, affiliate links and your own products, with a few in-app payout tools that depend on your country and account. This guide explains both in plain language, with the rules as published at the time of writing.
How YouTube pays you
Money on YouTube comes through the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). Once you are in, you can earn from ads on watch pages and in the Shorts feed, and from channel memberships, Super Chat and Super Thanks. You apply inside YouTube Studio, and YouTube decides.
| Tier | Subscribers | Watch time or Shorts views | What it unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early access | 500 | 3 public uploads in 90 days, plus 3,000 public watch hours in 12 months or 3 million public Shorts views in 90 days | Fan funding such as memberships |
| Full | 1,000 | 4,000 public watch hours in 12 months or 10 million public Shorts views in 90 days | Ad revenue and fan funding |
You also need to follow the monetization policies, live in a supported country, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, turn on 2-Step Verification and link an AdSense account. Only public long-form watch time counts, and only public Shorts views from the Shorts feed. Private, unlisted, deleted and live stream content does not.
Rules change. Confirm the current requirements on the official YouTube Help page before you plan around any number.
Why YouTube rejects channels
Hitting the numbers is not the same as being approved. YouTube reviews the channel itself, and applications usually take about a month. The most common reasons for rejection are:
Reused or repetitive content. Compilations, re-uploads, or videos with no meaningful original value added.
Policy problems. Copyright claims, misleading titles or thumbnails, spam and reused material.
Watch time that is not valid. Counts that are not public, or traffic YouTube treats as artificial.
Account issues. An active strike, no 2-Step Verification or an AdSense account that is not set up correctly.
If you are rejected, fix the specific issue first. You can appeal or reapply, with a waiting period before reapplying.
How Instagram pays you
Instagram has no single monetization button. There are two groups of income, and the second group is usually bigger for Indian creators.
Subscriptions, gifts, bonuses
Instagram and your fans pay you through in-app tools.
You need: a professional account and eligibility for your country. Some tools are invite-only and have follower thresholds, so check what your own account shows.Brand collaborations
Brands pay you to feature their product or service.
You need: a clear niche, steady posting, good engagement and a media kit with a rate card.Affiliate links
Stores and platforms pay you a commission on sales you drive.
You need: an audience that trusts your recommendations and a trackable link in your bio.Your own offers
Your customers pay you for a product, service, course or community.
You need: something to sell and a simple way to take payment.Availability and thresholds for the in-app tools are decided by Meta and differ by country, so treat any number you read online, including ours, as a starting point and confirm it in your Instagram settings and the Instagram Help Centre.
For brand deals, engagement beats follower count. A page with a few thousand followers who actually watch and reply is easier to sell to a local brand than a large, silent one. Use Reels for reach, make the first three seconds the hook and write keyword-rich captions so your posts are found in search.

Fix retention
Open with the payoff, cut the slow parts, test two thumbnails and repeat what works. On Instagram, test different hooks and posting times.
- 4Days 61 to 90
Apply and pitch

Mistakes that cost months
Buying fake views or subscribers to chase monetization. Valid, public watch time is what counts, and artificial activity can be removed or can put the channel at risk.
Re-uploading other people's clips. It is the most common reason for rejection.
Posting without a niche. Viewers and brands both need to know what you are about in a few seconds.
Ignoring search. Titles, descriptions and captions that match real queries bring in people who keep watching.
Believing guarantees. Anyone who promises approval or income does not control YouTube or Instagram.

Questions people ask
How much money can you earn from YouTube in India?
There is no fixed figure. Earnings depend on your views, audience location, niche and ad demand, and YouTube does not publish a single rate. Channels also earn from memberships, Super Chat and Super Thanks, and from brand deals outside YouTube.
How many subscribers do you need to get paid on YouTube?
For full ad revenue you need 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days. An early tier starts at 500 subscribers with 3 public uploads in 90 days and 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views.
Can you make money on Instagram with 1,000 followers?
Yes, but mostly through brand collaborations, affiliate links and selling your own products or services, not through Instagram payouts. Engagement and niche fit matter more than the raw follower count.
Does Instagram pay you directly?
Only through creator tools such as subscriptions, gifts and bonuses, and these depend on your country, account type and eligibility. Some are invite-only. Check what appears in your own Instagram professional dashboard.
How long does YouTube monetization approval take?
YouTube says applications are reviewed in about a month, though it can take longer. If you are rejected, you can appeal or reapply after fixing the issue.
Is it safe to buy views or subscribers to get monetized?
No. Watch hours and Shorts views must be valid and public, and artificial activity can be removed or can put the channel at risk. Build real watch time instead.
